NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In this mesmerizing novel, Ethan Canin, the author of America America and The Palace Thief, explores the nature of genius, rivalry, ambition, and love among multiple generations of a gifted family. Milo Andret is born with an unusual mind. A lonely child growing up in the woods of northern Michigan in the 1950s, he gives little thought to his own talent. But with his acceptance at U.C. Berkeley he realizes the extent, and the risks, of his singular gifts. California in the seventies is a seduction, opening Milo’s eyes to the allure of both ambition and indulgence. The research he begins there will make him a legend; the woman he meets there—and the rival he meets alongside her—will haunt him for the rest of his life. For Milo’s brilliance is entwined with a dark need that soon grows to threaten his work, his family, even his existence. Spanning seven decades as it moves from California to Princeton to the Midwest to New York, A Doubter’s Almanac tells the story of a family as it explores the way ambition lives alongside destructiveness, obsession alongside torment, love alongside grief. It is a story of how the flame of genius both lights and scorches every generation it touches. Graced by stunning prose and brilliant storytelling, A Doubter’s Almanac is a surprising, suspenseful, and deeply moving novel, a major work by a writer who has been hailed as “the most mature and accomplished novelist of his generation.” Praise for A Doubter’s Almanac “551 pages of bliss . . . devastating and wonderful . . . dazzling . . . You come away from the book wanting to reevaluate your choices and your relationships. It’s a rare book that can do that, and it’s a rare joy to discover such a book.”—Esquire “[Canin] is at the top of his form, fluent, immersive, confident. You might not know where he’s taking you, but the characters are so vivid, Hans’s voice rendered so precisely, that it’s impossible not to trust in the story. . . . The delicate networks of emotion and connection that make up a family are illuminated, as if by magic, via his prose.”—Slate “Alternately explosive and deeply interior.”—New York (“Eight Books You Need to Read”) “A blazingly intelligent novel.”—Los Angeles Times “[A] beautifully written novel.”—The New York Times Book Review (Editors’ Choice)

Parental Alienation is psychological abuse when one parent deliberately destroys the relationship between the children and the other parent or grandparent. This book is dedicated to all the families who suffer from the abuse of Parental Alienation. PAS is a form of domestic violence perpetrated using psychological abuse. The stories and poems are real. The people are real. The hurt and anger are real. Let's not forget this and work to intervene early with prevention and intervention so we can stop PAS from harming any more families.

This memoir is a riveting account of my journey to become one of America’s finest; a paratrooper and a Special Forces, Green Beret. This memoir will also take you through the very highs and very lows in working for the Postal Service. If you have heard the phrase Going Postal, I will give you tantalizing stories that will place you there with me as I attempted to navigate the mine fields of the Postal Service. After retiring from the Postal Service, with time on my hands, I started reminiscing about our dog Sparky, who we recently put to sleep, and the crazy things the dog had gotten into over the 20 years of his life. After authoring stories about Sparky and enjoying doing so, I turned my attention to my military and Postal careers, realizing I had so many interesting stories to tell about those experiences. With the combination of my military and Postal experiences and the stories associated with each, you will either feel sorry for me, or feel sorry for those I encountered. In titling my book “Going Postal,” I wanted to provide a different point-of-view of the phrase; mainly because it implies dangerous or unstable people work for the Postal Service. My stories will either confirm that belief or give you another perspective of a postal worker. The stories I share in this book are funny, daring, disappointing, revealing, insightful, and most of all, I believe, entertaining. You will travel with me through basic training, advanced infantry training, paratrooper jump school training, Special Warfare school, in addition to uncountable challenging situations the Postal Service presented. You will then understand why I decided to Go Postal.

This book of parent-to-parent advice aims to encourage, support, and bolster the morale of one of music's most important back-up sections: music parents. Within these pages, more than 150 veteran music parents contribute their experiences, reflections, warnings, and helpful suggestions for how to walk the music-parenting tightrope: how to be supportive but not overbearing, and how to encourage excellence without becoming bogged down in frustration. Among those offering advice are the parents of several top musicians, including the mother of violinist Joshua Bell, the father of trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, the parents of cellist Alisa Weilerstein, and those of violinist Anne Akiko Meyers. The book also features advice from music educators and more than forty professional musicians, including Paula Robison, Sarah Chang, Anthony McGill, Jennifer Koh, Jonathan Biss, Toyin Spellman-Diaz, Marin Alsop, Christian McBride, Miguel Zenón, Stephanie Blythe, Lawrence Brownlee, Kelli O'Hara, as well as Joshua Bell, Alisa Weilerstein, Wynton Marsalis, Anne Akiko Meyers, and others. The topics they discuss span a wide range of issues faced by the parents of both instrumentalists and singers, from how to get started and encourage effective practice habits, to how to weather the rough spots, cope with the cost of music training, deal with college and career concerns, and help young musicians discover the role that music can play in their lives. The parents who speak here reach a unanimous and overwhelming conclusion that music parenting is well worth the effort, and the experiences that come with it - from sitting in on early lessons and watching their kids perform onstage to tagging along at music conventions as their youngsters try out instruments at exhibitors' booths - enrich family life with a unique joy in music.
